Triple plays are gems, but they aren’t so rare that a team ought to go more than 40 years between.
The Yankees had, by far, the longest triple-play slump in MLB; the sombrero of shame now falls to the Toronto Blue Jays, who haven’t turned three since September 21, 1979. This means that today, for the first time, every MLB team has turned a triple play during my life time.
For reference, the Houston Astros have turned 9 triple plays in that span. The most triple plays during that span is by the Washington Nationals, who’ve turned 11 – all while wearing a different red-white-and-blue, that of the Montreal Expos. The league average is 5.6 triple plays since June 3, 1968. All but 8 teams have had triple killings in the 21st Century, the balance (except the Blue Jays) did so during the 1990s.
